Frequently asked questions

We know that you may have some questions before, during or after your interview with us. Below is a list of some of the questions that we get asked the most often.

How long does the recruitment process typically take?

Our recruitment process can take anywhere from 3-6 weeks, but of course this depends on the complexity of interviews that are required for each role. For example, some of our technical roles have technical tests and coding interviews that can mean the process is slightly longer than others.

I see there are many roles open on the website. Do I need to apply to all of them to maximise my chances?

We encourage you to apply for roles that closely match your skills, knowledge and experience. When you upload your CV into our system, the AI embedded into our careers site enhances your profile with general market knowledge. It will automatically indicate roles that are a fit for you and your match score, even if you have not considered some of them for yourself. If you do not see any open roles that are a match, please join our Talent Network so our recruitment team can contact you directly when additional opportunities arise.

I have been contacted for a job offer via social media pretending to be from Booking.com. How do I know if this job offer is legitimate?

Fake job offer scams are unfortunately on the rise, and like other well known brands, Booking.com’s name can be fraudulently used by scammers to give them an appearance of legitimacy. These job offers typically promise hefty salaries for simple tasks and minimal working hours, with a limited to non-existing hiring process. If you engage with them, scammers will typically ask you for upfront payments for purported training or administration fees or to perform your ‘tasks’.

If you are in doubt of the legitimacy of a job offer pretending to be from Booking.com, these are a few elements common to such scams that should alert you:

  • Scammers would generally approach you directly, e.g. via Whatsapp; contact details of the sender cannot be identified as belonging to Booking.com (e.g. email address).
  • Vague job description; minimum job requirements
  • Offering payments in digital currencies (e.g. USDT, ETH); asking you to open a cryptocurrency wallet (Booking.com does not compensate in digital currencies).
  • Asking for upfront payments (Booking.com will never ask for upfront payments during the hiring process) or
asking you to share personal data such as bank details, Social Security number, etc. before an offer of employment is agreed.

As a travel company, how is Booking.com doing since Covid-19?

While our business and the wider travel industry have been heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, as access to effective vaccinations increases around the world and restrictions to movement are relaxed, travel is now beginning to recover in many parts of the world. As we look to the future, we see a lot of anticipation and excitement for people to return to travel, whether it’s domestically or abroad and our mission remains to make it easier for everyone to do just that.

Will interviews be conducted remotely or in an office?

Due to the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the majority of our interviews are being conducted via Zoom video conferencing. As government advice in each country begins to allow for offices to reopen, face-to-face interviews may return however this will be at the discretion of each candidate.

What should I prepare for my first call with the recruiter?

The first stage after application is a phone call with our sourcers or recruiters – this will cover an overview of your career history, your knowledge, skills and experience as well as your interest in the role you’ve applied to. While there is not anything specific you can prepare, it is a great idea to have your CV to hand as well as a copy of the job posting you applied to. You can even have some examples of the knowledge, skills and experience you have gained in your career so far.

What is Booking.com’s policy on remote working?

As we move into a more hybrid way of working, with our employees dividing their time between home and the workplace, we believe that our offices will continue to serve as an important place for colleagues to come together, innovate and collaborate face-to-face on a regular basis. We know from research with our employees that they still value and need time together in the office to connect and collaborate. As such, our aim is to create a flexible concept that we can continue to adapt to meet the evolving needs of our workforce.

Can I start the job in my home country and then relocate?

We recommend you to discuss any questions you have about relocation in your initial conversation with the recruiter, as this is being handled on a case-by-case basis and may vary by the role you are applying for.

What is the team structure?

We tend to work in smaller, agile teams. Most of our teams have 6-12 members, but may vary based on a department. For example, in our development teams, you will also collaborate with other functional teams including Product Owners, Designers and Testers.

Will I have to work with Perl?

By default, our new backend systems are written in Java. We’re also porting many of our applications from Perl to Java, so you’d benefit from the ability to navigate in our original codebase and reading and understanding code there.

What opportunities are there for learning?

At Booking.com, we believe in the power of curiosity, experimentation and continuous learning – so much so, it’s one of our core values, ‘Learn Forever’. Because we recognise that developing the skills of our people is critical to achieving our strategic goals. We also see learning as a shared responsibility that happens anywhere, anytime, in the flow of work – led by the individual, with support from us. So whether it’s self-driven learning (with access to providers including LinkedIn Learning, Udemy and Blinkist), following a learning program designed for you and your role, or simply learning from colleagues around the world, you’ll find endless opportunities to develop at Booking.com.

Is there a pre-employment screening process at Booking.com?

Yes. Upon receiving an offer, and dependent on both the role and location, your data may be shared with a third party to conduct a Pre Employment Screening process as permitted by applicable law. This is done for the protection of Booking.com employees, customers, company assets and the brand, as well as to ensure that we only employ individuals with proven records and sufficient level of integrity and trustworthiness.

Depending on the vacancy and applicable law, a pre employment screening may include  verification of skill proficiency (including professional licence and driver’s licence), employment history, education, criminal history, financial history and other information (such as media information) that may be necessary for determining your qualifications and suitability for the open position at Booking.com, such as education and employment verification. You will be informed thoroughly about the entire screening process beforehand separately.
